BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–With economic development projects such as Volvo and infrastructure projects like the new Sheep Island Interchange, Berkeley County Supervisor Bill Peagler announced Thursday a change in the county’s leadership structure.

“It’s no secret that we have a $1 billion worth of new projects that we did not have when I took office on January 1st,” said Peagler. “This is a great problem to have, but one we must tackle to most effectively and efficiently run county government. While we have been working double and triple time to ensure these major projects move to fruition quickly, we believe an internal structural change can help Berkeley County continue to stay ahead on these projects.”

According to county spokesperson Michael Mule, the changes being made include changing the role of Deputy Supervisor of Operations Marc Hehn to that of the County Manager of Special Projects.

In this new capacity, Hehn will devote his full energy on the major projects in the county and continue to report directly to Supervisor Peagler. The Department Directors of the Engineering, Water & Sanitation, and Planning & Zoning Departments will now handle the administrative duties that the Deputy Supervisor currently has and will report directly to Supervisor Peagler.

Mule added that in order to ensure the county continues to most efficiently manage the contracts of the major projects, a new Contract Review Board will be established.

This board will be comprised of the County Manager of Special Projects, a selected member of the Legal Department and a selected member of the Finance Department.

County officials say the structural changes are expected to save the taxpayers over $50,000,  Hehn will also reportedly absorb the responsibilities of a currently open position.
