BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Men in high-heels will be tapping through Old Santee Canal Park in Moncks Corner on Saturday, Oct.15 for “Domestic Violence Awareness Month.”

South Carolina is ranked the worst in the nation for deadly violence against women.

My Sister’s House, a North Charleston nonprofit that provides resources, programs, and services to victims of domestic violence is sponsoring “Walk A Mile in Her Shoes” event at 9:00 a.m.

The walk, which has always been held in Charleston County, will add Berkeley and Dorchester Counties as new walk locations for this year.

“Last October I was awarded a grant to have staff dedicated to work in Berkeley and Dorchester counties,” said Elmire Raven, Executive Director of My Sister’s House. “Since we now have Community Domestic Violence Liaisons in each county, I felt that it was important to utilize their positions in the counties.”

The event will feature a march in women’s high-heeled shoes to protest domestic violence, spread awareness, and raise funds for the shelter.

“If we clear a $1,000 after expenses, that would be awesome,” said Raven.

The funds will be used to assist My Sister’s House in providing ongoing services, which include a 24-hour shelter and crisis line, as well as food and clothing.

Anyone is welcomed to walk. Registration can be done online and costs $15.

My Sister’s House has helped thousands of women leave dangerous, abusive relationships and begin new lives in peace and safety since its inception in 1980, said Raven. Services are free.

The 24-hour hotline for My Sister’s House is 843-744-3242.
