GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–Many local businesses have reported being extra busy as Hurricane Matthew moves north from the Bahamas  and closer to the lowcountry later this week.

A store employee at the Walmart Super Center in Goose Creek described the scene Tuesday as “crazy” as shoppers stocked up on water, flashlights, propane and batteries, leaving many of the shelves bare.

Emergency orders have been placed and two tractor trailers packed with bottled water are said to be headed to the store to replenish its already sold out supplies.

According to the National Weather Service, high pressure is expected to build over the eastern United States through mid week with Hurricane Matthew possibly bringing significant impacts to southeast South Carolina and southeast Georgia beginning Friday night.

Forecasters say expect a general deterioration in conditions through Thursday night as Matthew draws closer to the
area, then a more rapid deterioration on Friday as the Category 2 or potentially major hurricane approaches.

While some uncertainty regarding the track/strength of the storm remains, NWS officials say based on the latest NHC
forecast sustained tropical storm force winds (39-73 mph) are likely to begin Friday, mainly near the coast.

“Dangerous conditions are becoming increasingly likely,” NWS forecasters stated.

Meanwhile, Berkeley County’s Emergency Operations Center is at a stage of heightened awareness, OPCON 4, and is being manned with limited personnel at this time. Increased staffing of emergency personnel are on standby – ready to serve if called upon to do so, according to officials.

“As tracking models and predictions of Hurricane Matthew’s path become more clear, the county will provide additional information (such as sandbag locations, shelter locations and other notices) through our local media outlets,” the county posted on its official Facebook page.

County leaders are strongly encouraging residents to make their own emergency plans and ensure their family and friends also have plans in place. To help with your hurricane preparations, click here.
