Berkeley County Currently Under a Tropical Storm Warning

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Berkeley County leaders and emergency personnel prepare for storm impacts and encourage citizens to prepare for strong winds and potential flooding.

Berkeley County Sheriff’s office is prepared for the potential threats from the storm. They have received additional resources from across the state, including additional troopers from the South Carolina Highway Patrol, S.L.E.D. agents and National Guardsmen to assist with any needs.

Berkeley County is currently under a tropical storm warning and could see winds between 35 mph to 45 mph and gusts of 60 mph.

The storm’s impact is expected to be seen within the next 24 hours. Because of the imminent situation, Berkeley County will no longer be distributing sandbags. Over the course of the week, Berkeley County has distributed nearly 150,000 sandbags, or 3,200 tons of sand to 27 different locations.

Additionally, Berkeley County will no longer be providing transportation to the shelter at Macedonia Middle School. On Thursday, Berkeley County School District provided transportation from Cainhoy Elementary to Macedonia Middle School.

The following Berkeley County shelters are open:

• Berkeley Middle School
• Cane Bay High School- This a pet-friendly location. Citizens must stay with their pets during their time at the shelter. Pet owners are NOT allowed to drop-off their pets at the shelters.
• Cross High School
• Goose Creek High School
• Macedonia Middle School
• St. Stephen Elementary
• Westview Middle School
• Special needs shelter: If you require a special needs shelter, please call DHEC at 1-800-578-2031.

PLEASE NOTE: Those who stay in shelters are responsible for their bedding, food, water, and any other necessities they may have.

Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is at OPCON 1. The EOC will be staffed and operating 24 hours through the duration of the storm. OPCON 1 means a disaster or emergency situation is in effect, full-fledged emergency response operations are on-going.

CITIZEN CALL LINE: By calling (843) 719-4800, citizens can get updated information from the County’s Emergency Preparedness Department. Additionally, citizens can report issues the County should be made aware of.

DAMAGE ASSESSMENT: Additionally, Berkeley County Government created a Hurricane Florence Damage Assessment Facebook. Residents are encouraged to “LIKE” this page and utilize it as a tool to capture pictures and notes from the storm. BERKELEY COUNTY OFFICES: Berkeley County Government offices are closed until further notice.

LANDFILL AND CONVENIENCE CENTERS: The Berkeley County landfill and convenience center will be closed until further notice.

COURTHOUSE AND COURT CASES: Berkeley County Courthouse is closed until further notice. All court cases will be rescheduled. Summary Court cases for this week are canceled. All parties will receive new court information by mail.

BERKELEY COUNTY AIRPORT: The Berkeley County airport is closed and will remain closed until further notice.

ANIMAL CENTER: Berkeley Animal Center is not accepting animals and will remain closed until further notice.

BERKELEY COUNTY SCHOOLS: Berkeley County schools are closed until further notice.
