Postal carriers to collect food for hungry, encourage participation

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C – As Saturday, May 10, draws ever closer, letter carriers in more than 1,200 branches nationwide are full steam ahead to get ready for the 22nd annual Letter Carriers’ Food Drive.

“Too many people in this country are still going hungry every day,” NALC President Fredric Rolando said. “As letter carriers, we see this firsthand in just about every community we serve. But we aren’t the type of folks who simply move on to the next delivery and hope someone else will do something about it. Instead, for more than two decades now, our members have taken the lead in the effort to help solve this ongoing national problem.”

Last year, 74 million pounds of food was collected by postal carriers nation wide, feeding an estimated 30 million. South Carolina’s Harvest Hope Food Bank and Low Country Food Bank, with local churches, charities and food pantries, bring in the largest food donation of the year. Last year, Harvest Hope, which serves 20 Upstate, Midlands and Pee Dee counties, received 173,269 pounds of donations. Low country Food Bank, which covers 10 of South Carolina’s coastal counties, recieved 127,617 pounds of donations.

In the United States 1 in 6 Americans, 49 Million citizens, do not know where their next meal will come from. Of those 49 million, 16 million are children, hunger will impact their overall health and ability to perform in school. Nearly five million seniors citizens are also apart of that 49 million, with many who live on fixed incomes and are often too embarrassed to ask for help.

The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive’s timing is critical. Most food donations are received during the holidays, at the end of the year. When Spring comes along, many pantries will be depleted, and when Summer comes along many school breakfast and lunch programs are not available to children in need.
