GOOSE CREEK, S.C.—There was hardly a dry eye outside the home of Steve Skipton Sr. on Wednesday.
Skipton, a firefighter/EMT, for the Goose Creek Fire Department, is currently in a very difficult battle against cancer. However, he’s been aggressively fighting it, recently spending time away from home at MUSC to receive treatment.
In what has probably seemed like an eternity away from his wife and four children, Skipton finally returned home from the hospital Wednesday—but it was no ordinary homecoming.
Yesterday, many of his fellow firefighters, some from as far away as New Jersey, lined both sides of Skipton’s driveway, giving him a hero’s welcome home. As the ambulance arrived and EMS rolled Skipton on a stretcher into his driveway, friends and family eagerly greeted him, applauding along the way.
Skipton was an EMT in Camden City, New Jersey for 15 years as well as a first responder at 9/11 in New York City before eventually moving to South Carolina to work for the City of Goose Creek Fire Department. Because of his illness, he’s currently not able to work.
On June 22nd, there will be a Cornhole Tournament Fundraiser for the dedicated fireman and family man. The event will take place at 2:00 p.m. at LG’s by the Creek at 1005 Tanner Ford Boulevard in Hanahan. There will also be live music, door prizes, activities for the kids and much more. Proceeds from the event will help Skipton pay for his medical bills. For more information on the event, click here.
