BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.—It was a packed room as dozens of Moncks Corner homeowners came out to Monday night’s water and sanitation committee meeting to express their concern over the strong odor produced by GenEarth, a company that converts organic waste into renewable resources.

In a report by WCBD-TV, Steve Weber, the attorney for GenEarth, admitted to mistakes, including the lack of proper testing for metals.

“I’m not up here to tell you that the testing happened because it didn’t happen,” stated Weber.

The attorney for the company went on to add that they are doing everything they can to get rid of the facility’s strong odor. Despite his words, several council members were not sympathetic.

“The thing is to shut it down until we can get this thing worked out,” stated Councilman Jack Shurlknight.

Moncks Corner Mayor Bill Peagler also attended the meeting. He has urged homeowners to contact the Moncks Corner Police Department and file a report.

Many residents also addressed the smell. One homeowner stated that her house smelled like an “outhouse.”

According to Channel 2, the committee will call a special committee meeting in a couple of weeks before officially taking action. Officials say they need time to consult with their attorneys. The special meeting will take place on September 22nd.
