Law Enforcement Veteran Duane Lewis Announces Sheriff Candidacy

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Duane Lewis of Moncks Corner announced his candidacy for Berkeley County Sheriff today.

“I plan to restore the public trust and confidence in the sheriff’s office,” Lewis said, “by promoting professionalism, ethical conduct, and a culture of community service.”

Lewis added that his three decades of law enforcement work, community ties, and 10 years of executive command experience have prepared him for the job.

“I’ve managed multi-million dollar budgets for many years,” Lewis explained. ” I know that we are expected to be good stewards of public funds, which requires a smart, conservative approach to spending.”

Lewis began his law enforcement career in 1984 as a Deputy Sheriff in Berkeley County and specialized in investigating arson cases. In 1986 Lewis became a Police Officer with the City of Charleston Police Department and rose to the rank of investigator.

During his time in Charleston, Lewis investigated burglaries,armed robberies, homicides, sexual assaults, and arson. Lewis also worked as a Detective Sergeant with the City of Goose Creek Police Department, where he managed the Detective Division and supervised general investigators, narcotics officers, a juvenile officer, and school resource officer.

Lewis currently serves with the South Carolina Public Service Authority (Santee Cooper) Law Enforcement Division, where he has worked for more than for 20 years. In his current position as Deputy Chief, Lewis manages a $4.5 million dollar budget, personnel actions, development of policy and procedures, statewide criminal investigations, training and development, and community outreach for the state agency.

Lewis possesses a Bachelor of Science Degree and is a graduate of the FBI Command College (Quantico,
VA). Lewis has completed a wide variety of high level law enforcement executive management training courses,
as well as training in threat and risk assessments for school safety, internal affairs investigations, and
emergency management.
