Convicted Rapist From Moncks Corner Committed To Sexually Violent Predator Program

plain handcuffsBERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced today that a convicted rapist was adjudicated of being a sexually violent predator by a jury in Berkeley County on Tuesday.

Wilson stated that Michael Myers, 41, was then civilly committed to the S.C. Department of Mental Health Sexually Violent Predator Treatment Program.

In February 1992, Myers,, 41, a former resident of Moncks Corner, forced his way into a 30-year-old female’s apartment at knife point, authorities stated.  They added that he repeatedly raped her, forced her ten-year-old son to watch and threatened to kill them.

Deputies with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office responded to neighbors’ reports of screams coming from the apartment, and arrested Myers as he tried to run away.

Myers’ pled guilty on December 10, 1992 to criminal sexual conduct in the first degree, burglary in the first degree, and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.  He was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

According to Wilson, prior to Myers’ scheduled February 2014 release from prison, the State initiated an action under the Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) Act, seeking his civil commitment to the S.C. Department of Mental Health for long-term control, care, and treatment.

The State was required to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Myers was convicted of a sexually violent offense, and that he suffers from a mental abnormality or personality disorder that makes him likely to engage in future acts of sexual violence if not confined in a secure facility for treatment.

Myers will be reviewed annually to assess his mental status, and determine whether his mental abnormality and/or personality disorder has so changed he is safe to be at large, the attorney general added.

Christopher A. Morrow of the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office represented the State.
