MONCKS CORNER, S.C.–According to Berkeley Co. Elections and Voter Registration Director Adam Hammons, seven people have filed for Michael Lockliear’s Moncks Corner town council seat.
They are: Pam Atkins, Mike Everett, Jay Law, Frankie L Snider, Chad Sweatman, Rodney L Varner and Patricia Shepard Whaley.
The candidate who wins the special election will replace Michael Lockliear who was elected as the town’s mayor in March.
Lockliear replaced Bill Peagler who took over as Berkeley County’s new supervisor in January of this year.
The filing fee to run for town council was $100 with Monday being the deadline to file. According to Hammons, he was both surprised–yet not surprised by the number of candidates running for the council seat.
“There is a lot of interest in the town right now,” stated Hammons. “After a good turnout for the mayor’s special election, interest is high and people want to be involved. People want to be involved as Moncks Corner continues to grow.”
The upcoming election will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 with certification on Thursday, July 2, 2015 at 10 a.m., Hammons stated.
He also added that there could be a runoff if one candidate does not get 50% plus one vote. If that happens, the runoff would take place on Tuesday July 14, 2015.
Filing for the November General Election for Moncks Corner will open at noon on Monday August 3, 2015 and close at noon on Monday August 17, 2015.
“Filing will take place in our office,” stated Hammons. “The winner (of this election) will need to file again in August if they wish to run in November.”
