BERKELEY COUNTY, SC --Multiple puppies adopted from the Doc Williams SPCA in Berkeley County have reportedly tested positive for parvo.

According to WebMD, the highly contagious viral disease can be deadly. Symptoms in dogs include lethargy, severe vomiting, loss of appetite and bloody, foul-smelling diarrhea that can lead to life-threatening dehydration.

WCBD-TV confirmed that that three puppies did test positive for parvo at two veterinary clinics. However, the one puppy at Goose Creek Veterinary Clinic and one of the two puppies at the Animal Medical Clinic of Goose Creek were from the same litter of puppies.

Marcia Atkinson, Doc Williams SPCA's executive director, told the TV station parvo is not spreading at their facility.

"We actually ramped up to what we call level two in our protocols, which simply means that we test every dog under six months of age for parvo upon intake,” she stated. "We're confident that we have a good solid plan but if it does get to that point, we are able to take the appropriate steps swiftly to avoid continued contamination or for something to spread."

Atkinson says they have returned the adoption fee to those who wanted the fee returned after adopting the Parvo positive puppies.
