BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.—Hours after a Berkeley County Sheriff deputy was shot Thursday night, a manhunt continues today for the shooter.

Multiple law enforcement agencies are assisting in the search—including the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and U.S. Marshals.

Berkeley Co. Interim Sheriff Butch Henerey stated that SLED is also using helicopters and blood hounds to search for the suspect who shot Lt. Will Rogers, a 20-plus-year veteran at the sheriff’s office.

Henerey stated Rogers was struck multiple times—including once in the head. He was airlifted to MUSC where he is currently listened in critical but stable condition.

At approximately 10:30 p.m., Rogers was reportedly talking to a customer in the parking lot of the Exxon gas station

located at Highway 52 and Cypress Gardens Road.

As he was talking, Henerey stated that the suspect came around the corner wearing a mask and shot the veteran deputy. The shooter then carjacked a vehicle and fled the scene.

The vehicle was later found abandoned at a boat landing along Cypress Gardens Road—just a short distance from the crime scene.

The suspect is still at large and is considered armed and dangerous.

Authorities have stated that the shooter is between 5’10” and 6’4”, up to 225 pounds, wearing a mask, white long sleeved shirt, and gray sweat pants with a white stripe. He was reportedly carrying a maroon/red in color silk sack. His race is unknown at this time.

Rogers is presently a night shift supervisor at the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office. He was also one of more than a dozen candidates who ran for Berkeley County sheriff during the recent Republican primary.
