GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–On Saturday, May 23rd, at approximately 9:15 a.m. Goose Creek police say a male suspect entered the CVS Pharmacy located at 431‐B St. James Avenue and robbed pharmacy employees at knife point.

According to a witness, the man later identified as Roddy Lee Russell initially walked up to the register and placed two Old Spice deodorants on the counter before putting his hands inside his hoodie pockets.

“I would like to get these two things and give me all of your Hydrocodone and Oxycodone,” the man reportedly told a pharmacy worker.

At the same time, the worker told police that Russell pulled out a knife and opened it and stated that while he was opening the safe, which was directly behind him, then Russell got on top of the red counter near the cash register and yelled for him to hurry.

The worker told police that he placed one opened bottle of Hydrocodone and four unopened Hydrocodone bottles on the counter.

In the incident report, the worker stated that he attempted to get a bag for the subject, but instead the subject scooped the bottles off the counter and began running towards the front of the store.

While the subject was running away, one of the deodorants he was holding fell onto the ground in the aisle.

The suspect, described as African‐American or Latino, fled the area on foot with approximately four bottles of the prescription drugs, according to police.

Officers stated that during the evening hours of May 23rd, a female caller contacted investigators after
seeing the suspect’s photograph aired by local media, and informed him the suspect was her
husband, Roddy Lee Russell.

An investigator then spoke to Russell by phone and arranged his surrender the following day.

On May 24th, Russell surrendered at the Goose Creek Police Department and was taken into
custody on the charges of armed robbery and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Russell was transported to the Berkeley County Detention Center to await bond proceedings.
