BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.—A fundraiser is in the works for Lt. Will Rogers.

The veteran deputy was shot in the head on May 14th at the Exxon gas station located at the intersection of Highway 52 and Cypress Gardens Road.

Authorities located the shooter exactly one week later; however, he was not taken alive.

After a 10-hour standoff with 32-year-old Jerome Thomas Caldwell in the Cromwell Alley area of downtown Charleston, police shot and killed him after they say he opened fire on them.

Rogers’ recovery has been nothing short of a miracle.

County officials say Rogers is currently listed in stable condition–a big improvement from just one week prior.

Rogers continues to recognize family, friends and co-workers and is now walking with assistance and eating a modified diet of soft foods.

“Lt. Rogers’ family thanks the public for so many prayers and well wishes,” read a post on the official Facebook page of the Berkeley Co. Sheriff’s Office. “While Lt. Rogers continues to improve, the family knows that there is still a long road ahead and asks for the public’s continued prayers.”

Rogers is not only a longtime deputy, he is a U.S. Marine veteran, too. He also has two children and four grandchildren.

A poker run to benefit Lt. Rogers is scheduled for June 27th at the Steel Horse Saloon located at 2033 Old Highway 52 in Moncks Corner.

Registration starts at 10:30 a.m. The fee is $15 for riders and $5 for passengers. A meal is also included at the end of the run.

The event will also include live entertainment, raffle prizes and an auction.

One-hundred percent of the proceeds will go toward helping Lt. Rogers pay for his medical care.

For additional information on the poker run, call (843) 761-3399.
