Berkeley County Schools Raise More Than $100,000 For The American Heart Association

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–During the 2014-2015 school year, Berkeley County schools helped save lives through research and educational programs, by partnering with the American Heart Association.

Berkeley County schools raised $107,101.52. Daniel Island School raised the most money of all the schools that participated in Berkeley County, donating $16,885. 58.

Sangaree Elementary School raised the second largest amount, donating $16,152.31.

By participating in Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart, students learned about the important role that exercise and nutrition play in heart health. Students also learned the warning signs for heart attack and stroke, about calling 9-1-1 and about volunteerism and helping others.

Principal of Daniel Island School, Marty French, said, “Daniel Island School is very excited about being one of the top fundraisers in the state for Jump Rope for Heart. Lauren Chambers, one of our Physical Education teachers, planned and organized the event. Many purposeful causes garner involvement but Jump Rope for Heart was chosen to be one of our main charitable foci this year. Our students were eager to participate and gather pledges to support the American Heart Association and our community was generous in giving. I’m always thankful for the many types of support that our parents and community show our school.”

Principal of Sangaree Elementary School, Alan Wilson, said, “Ms. Tracy Orvin, our PE teacher, has coordinated Jump Rope for Heart for 15 years. Through her efforts, students have learned about keeping a healthy heart and the Sangaree community has generously contributed more than $100,000 to the American Heart Association.”
