MONCKS CORNER, S.C.–Santee Cooper Board Chairman W. Leighton Lord III and President and CEO Lonnie Carter are issuing the following statement in support of ongoing state discussions to remove the Confederate flag from the Statehouse grounds:

“Santee Cooper commends Gov. Haley and the General Assembly for promoting unity in South Carolina in the face of last week’s unthinkable tragedy in Charleston,” they stated. “We support their efforts to remove the Confederate flag from the grounds of the Statehouse and applaud their leadership in general to promote healing across our great state.”

On Monday night, Berkeley County Council also passed a resolution urging lawmakers to remove the flag from Statehouse grounds.

The move comes after last Wednesday’s church shooting that left nine people attending Bible study dead inside the Emanuel AME Church.

Dylann Roof, 21, has since been charged with nine counts of murder. If guilty, he could face the death penalty.

Authorities say the shooting was racially motivated.

A website believed to be owned by Roof shows the Columbia man in various poses with the Confederate flag. He also writes of his hatred of black people.
