MONCKS CORNER, S.C.–On Tuesday night, businessman Jay Law captured 219 of the votes–the most of out of the seven candidates running for Moncks Corner Town Council.

“This is an important time in our community. We are faced with growth, tax burdens, traffic concerns, crime and so much more,” Law has stated. “I understand and have seen first hand how these burdens can impact a community and the future for our children. That is why I decided to run for this position.”

Because Law, a local realtor and broker,  didn’t receive 50 percent of the plus one he will face fellow businessman Chad Sweatman in a runoff on July 14th.

Sweatman received 129 votes.

Both men are seeking Michael Lockliear’s vacated seat. The former councilman became the town’s mayor in May.

Law has received several endorsements from the community including that of Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury.

“I am supporting Jay in his run for town council because I know he has the ability and understanding to be an effective leader and representative to the citizens of our town,” stated Salisbury.

Moncks Corner Town Councilwoman Susie Durden Reed and Berkeley County Councilman Josh Whitley have also endorsed Law.

Law is also the son of former state Rep. James Law.

Sweatman, a certified public accountant who owns and operates Chadwick D. Sweatman, C.P.A.,P.C., says if elected he wants to continue making Moncks Corner an even better place to live.

“My mission as councilman is to encourage the unprecedented growth of our township, support the revitalization and enhancement efforts of the downtown district and promote activities for the children of our community,” Sweatman has stated.

The seat’s term runs through December 31, 2015.
