F-16, Cessna Collide Mid-Air In Berkeley County

airplane crashMONCKS CORNER, S.C.–Shortly after 11 a.m., the Berkeley County Rescue Squad was dispatched to Lewisfield Plantation near Old Highway 52 in reference to collision involving two planes.

Authorities have since confirmed that an F-16 and a Cessna collided in air.

The pilot of the military aircraft did eject safely and was transported by Berkeley County EMS to a nearby hospital.

This pilot’s condition is unknown at this time.

The investigation will be turned over to the United States Air Force.

rescue squadIn a statement, Shaw Air Force Base officials say a team of investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board will be arriving on scene to determine the exact cause of the accident.

“Our thoughts are with the friends and family of anyone aboard the civilian aircraft,” stated Shaw Air Force Base Spokesperson Peter Knudson stated.

NTSB confirmed that two people were on board the small engine airplane. Both are reported dead.

Authorities say the military aircraft struck the side of the smaller plane.

Debris from the Cessna is scattered throughout the location of the collision– including a rice field and in the water.

A command post has been established in the Big Lots parking lot in Moncks Corner just off Old Hwy. 52.

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, Charleston County Rescue Squad, Salvation Army, North Charleston Fire Department and other agencies are on scene.
