Funeral Arrangements Announced For Plane Crash Victims

MONCKS CORNER, S.C.–Funeral arrangements have been made for Michael and Joseph Johnson. The father and son were killed when their small plane collided with an F-16 over Moncks Corner on Tuesday morning.

Early Wednesday morning rescue crews recovered the body of the elder Johnson from the water near Lewisfield Plantation just off Old Highway 52. His son’s body was located Thursday morning.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM on Saturday, July 11, 2015 in the First Baptist Church in Moncks Corner.

The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday from 2:00 PM until the hour of service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the First Baptist Church (112 East Main Street, Moncks Corner, SC 29461) to the American Cancer Society (5900 Core Road, Suite 504, North Charleston, SC 29406), or to the Salvation Army (203 White Street, Moncks Corner, SC 29461).

The arrangements are being directed by Dial-Murray Funeral Home.

Joe Johnson was a graduate of Berkeley High School where he was a former “All Region” pitcher for the baseball team. He attended The Citadel and played baseball, as his father did before him, and then went on to Louisburg College from which he received his associate’s degree and was an “All Conference” pitcher. After graduation, Joe was drafted by the Atlanta Braves, and was still playing baseball in a local men’s league.

The 30-year-old was also a licensed pilot and was currently logging hours to become a commercial pilot while working as a member of the ground crew for Delta Airlines.

Joe leaves behind a wife and young daughter.

Mike Johnson was a 1969 graduate of The Citadel where he also played baseball. Johnson served in the Army Airborne during Vietnam, and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the Army Reserves.

He was a former administrator for the Berkeley County school system from which he retired as a vocational instructor. Joe Johnson was also a pilot, mechanic, and former skydiver.
