Santee Cooper Sets Pond Ash Recycling Record For June

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – Santee Cooper set a monthly record for pond ash reclaimed for recycling in June, and the utility has already reclaimed almost as much pond ash from three generating stations this year as it did in all of 2014.

In June, excavators reclaimed 47,864 tons of ash from ponds at Jefferies, Winyah and Grainger generating stations, more than in any other month since Santee Cooper launched an innovative beneficial use program to provide pond ash to manufacturers for use in concrete and cement products. In the first six months of 2015, Santee Cooper’s ash pond reclamation program has provided 221,244 tons of pond ash for beneficial reuse, compared to 265,145 tons in all of 2014.

Santee Cooper announced plans in November 2013 to begin reclaiming ash from seven ash ponds at the three generating stations, which expanded a decades-old program that recycled dry ash and gypsum for use in the construction industry. Santee Cooper ash has been used as a building material in a number of projects, including Charleston’s Ravenel Bridge. Expanding the program to pond ash, by working with manufacturers to develop new processes and technologies, provides environmental and economic benefits and is cost-effective for Santee Cooper customers. For instance, The SEFA Group built a new STAR® facility in Georgetown to handle pond and dry ash, a facility that began commercial operation in April 2015.
