BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.—A Berkeley County dispatcher is being credited for saving the life of a 77-year-old woman who became unconscious early Tuesday morning.
According to the woman’s husband, John Wyndham, he initially woke up to find his wife, Margaret, gasping for air. He then ran to wake up his two children– James Wolley and Cynthia Brown.
They then called 9-1-1, and it was dispatcher Jessica Litchfield who answered the call.
On 911 tapes obtained by WCBD-TV, Wolley can be heard screaming, “I think she’s dead! She’s not breathing! She opened her mouth, she’s trying to breathe!”
Like a pro, Litchfield calmly guided the family on what to do.
“Her jaw did lock, so we weren’t able to do any more CPR, so we concentrated on just the compressions.” Litchfield told the TV station.
Brown said, “We took her off the bed. He started CPR…and that’s how we did it.”
In the end, Margaret survived. On Thursday, she received a pace-maker and is expected to get out of the hospital this weekend.
Shortly after the frightening 9-1-1 call, Litchfield got to meet the family she helped face to face for an emotional reunion.
“She is the most wonderful person in my life right now, she saved my mom,” stated Brown.
