BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Former Berkeley County Superintendent Dr. Rodney Thompson won’t be starting the new school year off in the classroom after all.

Thompson has reportedly stepped down as a teacher for the Berkeley County School District. BCSD officials said Thompson resigned on August 10th–just days before students and teachers headed back to class.

In November 2014, Thompson was released from his superintendent contract and offered a teaching job.

“I feel the timing is right for me to request from the Board of Education to be released from my contract during the summer of 2015,” Thompson wrote in an  email. “Making this announcement now allows our Board ample time to select a replacement and I will assist with the transition as much as the Board desires.”

Five months after being released from his contract, a grand jury indicted Thompson on ethics charges related to the 2012 ‘Yes 4 Schools’ campaign. Two days after the indictment, he was given a $10,000 PR bond.

According to The Post and Courier, Thompson did not return the paper’s request for comment regarding his latest resignation.

Recently, the school board voted to hire Virginia educator Brenda Blackburn as the county’s next superintendent with an annual salary of $210,000.

Her contract runs from November 1st through June 30, 2018.
