BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Cainhoy Elementary/Middle, Cross Elementary, J.K. Gourdin Elementary and St. Stephen Elementary Schools will participate in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) during the 2015-2016 school year.
The FFVP is a federally assisted program that provides free fresh fruits and vegetables to students in elementary schools during the school day.
The goal of the program is to improve children’s overall diet and create healthier eating habits that will impact their present and future health.
The program helps schools provide healthier food choices, expand the variety of fruits and vegetables students experience and increase students’ fruit and vegetable consumption.
Schools that participate in the FFVP receive between $50 and $75 per student for the school year.
The school purchases additional fresh fruits and vegetables to serve free to students during the school day at times other than breakfast and lunch.
