BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–According to Chief Deputy Mike Cochran, while conducting  the on-going homicide investigation, Berkeley Co. Sheriff’s Office detectives received information of a possible location of one of the suspects involved in the home invasion and homicide that occurred at 512 McCrystal Circle on Sunday morning.

Late Monday evening, members of the U.S. Marshal Task Force with the assistance of the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office responded to a house located in Knightsville in an attempt to locate the suspect, authorities stated.

Cochran says once on the scene, U.S. Marshals and DCSO deputies made contact with the occupants of the home, and it was confirmed that a second suspect, Matthew Grainger, was inside the residence and had barricaded himself in the attic and refused to exit and surrender to authorities.

Members of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) SWAT team were notified and responded to the scene.

Cochran says Grainger continued to refuse to cooperate and exit the attic of the house. After authorities issued numerous commands to the suspect to exit the residence, the decision was made to introduce chemical munitions (gas) into the residence in an attempt to get the suspect to exit the attic and surrender to authorities.

Deputies say after using the irritants,  Grainger exited the house and was taken into custody.

Authorities say Matthew Grainger will be transported to the HFDC were he will be booked and charged with murder. A hold will also be placed on him pending a bond hearing schedule for Tuesday.

Sunday’s home invasion claimed the life of 32-year-old Mark Connor. One suspect, Glenn Randall Lane II, 29, of North Charleston was arrested within 12 hours of the crime and also faces murder charges.

After talking to several other witnesses, detectives say they were able to determine that Lane along with Grainger broke into the home while the residents were asleep and began dispersing pepper-spray similar to that used by law enforcement.
