MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – According to Santee Cooper officials, the past several days of extreme rainfall throughout South Carolina have caused increased inflows to the Santee Cooper Lakes system, resulting in spilling operations on Lake Marion.
Santee Cooper’s dams and dikes are secure. Spilling is a normal part of Santee Cooper’s hydroelectric operations in periods of increased flows into the lakes.
Santee Cooper began spilling yesterday through six primary spillway gates at the Santee Dam, and is increasing the spill today to 50,000 cubic feet (or about 375,000 gallons) of water per second into the Santee River. Spilling will continue until further notice and developments will be noted on Santee Cooper’s Facebook page and Twitter feed. Information will also be updated each business day on the lakes information line, 1-800-92LAKES.
“We are continuing to monitor the weather and any impacts it may have so that we can respond safely and promptly to any issues that arise,” said Mike Poston, vice president of retail operations. “We have seen a few scattered outages on the system since the storm began. Currently, response times are taking a little longer than usual due to road conditions, and we appreciate customers’ patience.”
