BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.—According to the National Weather Service, a flood warning continues for the Santee River near Jamestown.

Governor Nikki Haley stated in a press conference Thursday that in the next 72 hours flooding from the Santee River is expected to combine with flooding from Lake Marion.

“If that spills over into the Santee, that’s going to be extremely problematic,” Haley said.

Haley added that Highway 41 will be impossible to travel on.

The governor also warned people in Jamestown to strongly consider evacuating the area.

“We are having an issue getting those people to leave because they have been in hurricane situations,” she said. “This is, as the general said, ‘a different kind of bad.'”

As of 9 a.m. Thursday, NWS officials say the water level from the Santee River has already risen to 17.6 feet and is currently causing flooding in areas that are not normally covered by water.

Flood stage is ten feet, the NWS reports.

At this time, the NWS reports that moderate flood remains a problem in the area; however, major flooding is in the forecast.

The NWS reports that the Santee River will continue rising to near 23.9 feet by Monday evening.

Additional rises may be possible thereafter, the NWS reports.

According to the National Weather Service, at 23 feet, homes at the end of Lawton Farm Lane will begin to flood.
