BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Convicted cop killer Jesse Sapp has been found dead inside his prison cell at Lieber Correctional Institution, authorities stated.

Ninth Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson says Sapp committed suicide by hanging himself inside his cell.

According to authorities, Sapp shot and killed Corporal Kenneth Johnson while conducting a holiday weekend public safety checkpoint in Berkeley County in 2002.

Sapp was eventually sentenced on May 9, 2003 to death by lethal injection.

Recently, however, Sapp had been hoping for a new trial.

In April 2015, Sapp appeared in court along with his attorney asking for a new sentence hearing because of “troubling police misconduct.”

A judge had yet to make a decision on Sapp’s appeal.
