Beloved Lake Moultrie Fire Chief Passes Away

BONNEAU BEACH, S.C.–The local firefighter community is mourning the loss of one of their own. On Monday, Chief Charlie Barton,  a retired inspector for Lockheed Martin, passed away at his home after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 75-years-old.

“The Moncks Corner Rural Fire Department would like to send our prayers to The Lake Moultrie Fire Department and to the family. RIP Chief!” wrote Moncks Corner Rural on its official Facebook page.

“Condolences to Lake Moultrie Fire Department on the passing of Chief Barton. RIP, sir,” wrote Jerry Morrison.

Barton’s funeral will take place at 1:00 PM Friday afternoon, October 30, 2015, at Dial-Murral Funeral Home in Moncks Corner. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery, 684 Broughton Rd., Moncks Corner. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Thursday evening. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Lake Moultrie Fire Department, PO BOX 220, Bonneau, SC 29431.

The longtime fire chief was a US Navy veteran of the Cuban Crisis and the owner and operator of Custom Drapery Installation. He was also a member of the American Legion 0062, St. Stephen, the Bonneau Beach Civic Club, the Berkeley County Chief’s Association, and the Starlifter’s Bass Anglers. He was preceded in death by a brother, Glenn A. Barton.

Surviving are, his wife, Judy Smith Barton; his mother of Bonneau Beach; a daughter, Donna B. Kuzio and her husband, Paul, of Emporia, VA; a son, Stephen N. Barton and his wife, Sunshine, of Waldorf, MD; a stepdaughter, Teresa M. Ledbetter and her husband, Steve, of Casselberry, FL; a stepson, Terry James Minter and his wife, Pam, of Bonneau Beach; a sister, Jessie B. Sering of Bonneau Beach; ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
