MONCKS CORNER, S.C.–One local animal shelter is struggling to make room for additional animals throughout Berkeley County after the historic flood that hit the area. According to Doc Williams SPCA executive director Marcia Atkinson, the shelter is currently at 400% capacity.

“Animals have been continuously turned in since the rains in early October,” stated shelter board member Linda Alexander Vinson‎. “I was there yesterday and saw animals being housed in crates under tents outside of the shelter building.”

Limited space isn’t the shelter’s only issue at the moment. Vinson stated that the recent flood has caused the shelter to also experience leaks as well as sewage issues.

“A temporary location is being sought to safely house the animals,” stated Vinson. “The proper authorities have been notified and have begun responding to this dire situation.

In the meantime, she says there are items the shelter can use. Shelter workers are asking for donations of old blankets, bathroom mats and bath towels.

“With the weather getting cooler, these items are used to keep the animals warm,” stated Vinson. “Also, should you wish to make a donation, please visit their website, docwilliamsspca.org and you can securely make a donation. Every dollar helps them to purchase the supplies they need.”
