MONCKS CORNER, S.C.–On November 3rd, Moncks Corner voters will head to the polls to elect three people to town council. Currently, there are five people vying for the job.

The three candidates with the most votes will win a seat on town council.

Over the next several days leading up to the election, The Berkeley Observer will be introducing you to each of the five candidates with a Q&A.

Today, we start with Jay Law. To learn more about him, visit his official campaign page on Facebook.

1. Why are you running for town council?

Moncks Corner is on the cusp of excellent growth opportunities  and the decision made today will effect our community for years.  We need to attract business traffic to our local vendors and business owners.  We also need to understand growth and how it takes on both positive and negative forms.  I am the only candidate recommended by RPAC based on interviews regarding protecting property owners and understanding development and growth issues.  We need to be looking to positive growth that improves property values and drives our community to grow while minimizing overcrowding and crime issues.

2. For anyone unfamiliar with who you are, can you talk a little more about your background?
I am a business-owner and independent contractor so hard work is how I make a living.  I am husband and father of two children as well as a lifelong Member of First Baptist Church in Moncks Corner.  I recently began a Children’s Worship program within our Church, I have a Master of Business Degree from Charleston Southern, a Bachelor of Arts from the University of South Carolina and a High School diploma from LBA/SJCA in Moncks Corner.   I have served as a Director for the Charleston Board of Realtors, Director of the Work Force Investment Board, and currently serve as Vice Chair on a South Carolina Board of Realtors committee.  I also volunteer within the community of many levels from t-ball coach to the Lions Club raising money to help the less fortunate in our community receive affordable eye care.

3. Are there any problems in Moncks Corner that you feel need to be addressed? If so, what?

Growth, and with growth comes traffic concerns, overcrowding and crime.  Community pride and involvement is key.  Growth is coming, whether we are passive about it and react or whether we act first to prepare for the growth will depend on our elected officials.  I have worked within communities and witnessed and understand the mistakes made during times of growth within those communities and how we can prevent those  issues and stay ahead of the growth, traffic, overcrowding and crime.

4. Anything else worth mentioning?

I see an opportunity for our town to become the best it can be and continue to thrive, or in the wrong hands be a community where people go when they cannot afford to live elsewhere.  I understand these issues and how to avoid these issues in my experiences with other developing communities in the Lowcountry.  This town and our community is very important to my family and me.  I have the knowledge and understanding to guide us into decades of continued success as a community.
