Meet the Candidates: Tory Liferidge for Moncks Corner Town Council

MONCKS CORNER, S.C.–On November 3rd, Moncks Corner voters will head to the polls to elect three people to town council. Currently, there are five people vying for the job.

The three candidates with the most votes will win a seat on town council.

Over the next several days leading up to the election, The Berkeley Observer will be introducing you to each of the five candidates with a Q&A.

Today, we start with Tory Liferidge.

1. Why are you running for town council?

I decided to run for town council to be an active voice for the broader community. With so much happening in our town, we need to engage more people in local governing and help Moncks Corner grow in ways that are healthy and smart.

2. Why do you think you’re the best candidate for the job?

I believe the strength of my candidacy can be best understood through a statement I made at 18 yrs. old, “I’m never coming back to Moncks Corner.”  After living and being involved in two major metropolitan cities (Baltimore, MD and New York City), my 38 yr. old self recognizes the idiocy of that statement and the jewel of my hometown. I believe my education, vocation, experience and positive voice in the community can be an added resource to an already strong town leadership.

3. For anyone unfamiliar with you, can you talk a little more about your background? (EX: education, family, career, etc?)

I am a 1995 graduate of Berkeley High School and 1999 graduate of Duke University where I attained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and minors in Business and African American Studies.  Following a call to ministry, I attended Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC and received a Master of Divinity degree in 2008. My greatest education came as the youngest of five boys born to Edith and Jacob Liferidge, Jr. and being raised here in Moncks Corner. Prior to entering the ministry, I worked in a management training program with Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated in Charleston and in Pharmaceutical Sales with Merck & Co. (NC & MD). After serving as a Youth and Young Adult Pastor for an 8,000 member church in New York City, I now have the privilege of serving in my hometown as pastor of Grace Reformed Episcopal Church.

4. What issues in Moncks Corner are important to you and why?

For me, the key issues facing our town are infrastructure for growth (as the county seat of Berkeley County), revitalization and preservation of our historical downtown area and maintaining the high quality of our civil servants and services. These issues are critical components of what I consider to be smart growth. Comprehensive planning is a must for our town in the face of the great prosperity. If we are not careful, we will become “cookie cutter” and lose the great charm that makes us, US!

5. Are there any problems in Moncks Corner that you feel need to be addressed? If so, what?

One of the greatest problems in our town is the lack of civic engagement by the greater Moncks Corner community. We need more of our community invested in the growth, health and celebration of our town.

6. How would you describe your character?

I would describe myself as one who is humble, balanced and passionate. I am always aware of my human limitations and approach everything with grace. I also fight for balance as long as it never undermines integrity, character or health. I give my entire being to whatever is before me.
