GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–According to Captain John Grainger with the Goose Creek Police Department, around 4:30 p.m., a GCPD patrol officer attempted to stop a vehicle after allegedly smelling marijuana coming from it.

Police say the vehicle turned from Redbank Rd. into the Greenview subdivision, disregarded three stop signs, and sped away from
the officer. The suspect vehicle began passing other motorists on Old Back River Rd., a two lane road, at which time the officer slowed and cancelled the stop attempt.

The officer reportedly proceeded down Old Back River Rd. and was flagged by citizens pointing out that the suspect
vehicle had left the roadway and rolled onto its roof.

Grainger says that the driver, Nia Wilson, and passenger, Lamont Jenkins, emerged from the vehicle and were
detained.

Police say Wilson was not injured; however, Jenkins was transported to Trident Regional Medical Center (TRMC) where he died from his injuries. The Berkeley County Coroner’s
Office was notified of Jenkins’ passing by TRMC staff.

Wilson was taken into custody, charged by GCPD with Failure to Stop for Blue Lights, Driving Under Suspension 2nd Offense, and Possession with Intent to Distribute Marijuana, and booked
into the Berkeley County Detention Center.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol was called out to investigate the circumstances of the suspect vehicle collision.
