BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The family of an unarmed, naked man who was shot and killed by a Georgia police officer in March filed a wrongful death lawsuit Wednesday.

Anthony Hill, 27, was originally from Moncks Corner and graduated from Berkeley High School in 2006. He was also an Air Force veteran.

Authorities say Hill was shot and killed by DeKalb County Officer Robert Olsen on March 9th. Police were responding to a 911 call about a naked man wandering the apartment complex acting erratically. Once on scene, officers say Hill lunged at Officer Olsen in a threatening manner.

Hill’s family told WSB-TV that they filed the lawsuit on Veterans Day to make others aware that some veterans need help when they return home. According to Hill’s mother, her son battled mental illness after leaving the military.

“I think you need to understand  you must always respect them, because they gave their lives and they gave their time and they went into dangerous areas, so when they do come back — and a lot of them don’t come back the way they go — you need to love them, embrace them and understand them. And take the time to see the situation,” Carolyn Baylor Giummo, Hill’s mother, said.

The lawsuit not only names the officer that fired the fatal shot, but it also lists the DeKalb County Police Department, the county and its board of commissioners.

DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James is reportedly still considering whether to present the case to a grand jury for indictment.

Meanwhile, Officer Olsen remains on administrative leave.
