BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–On Monday, U.S. Senator Tim Scott joined the students at Nexton Elementary in Summerville to present World War II veteran Cpl. William Smoak with his Bronze Star and other service medals.
“What an honor,” Scott tweeted.
According to Cpl. Smoak’s daughter, her dad came down with malaria during the war and had never received his medals. That’s when she reached out to Scott for help.
“I’m so glad we were able to play a part in ensuring he received the honors he earned while serving our nation with bravery and distinction,” stated Scott.
Hundreds of students at the school got a chance to say “thank you” as well as watch Scott present Smoak with his
long overdue medals.
The Bronze Star is a United States decoration awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces for either heroic achievement, heroic service, meritorious achievement, or meritorious service in a combat zone.
