BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.—On Monday night, Berkeley County Council passed an ordinance authorizing the execution and delivery of a fee in lieu of a tax as part of an incentive agreement between Berkeley County government and Gerber Childrenswear LLC.
Under the ordinance, the county agrees to accept certain negotiated fees in place of ad valorem taxes with respect to the establishment or expansion of certain facilities in the county.
Property ad valorem taxes are the major source of revenue for state and municipal governments.
In August, Gerber Childrenswear LLC, a leading marketer of children’s apparel, announced it would construct a new distribution center in Berkeley County.
The $33 million investment is expected to create 45 new jobs over the next five years.
Anticipated to be fully operational in the second quarter of 2016, hiring for this facility is expected to take place in the first quarter of 2016.
