BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–On Monday, a new ordinance that would limit one’s ability to discharge firearms on their property failed to pass second reading.
While discussing the ordinance, Berkeley County Council remained split.
Councilman Tommy Newell authored the ordinance and voted in support of it. Councilman Jack Schurlknight also supported the ordinance.
However, they were outnumbered by Councilmen Josh Whitley, Steve Davis and Dennis Fish and Caldwell Pinckney Jr. All of them voted against the ordinance.
The ordinance would have prohibited discharging a firearm near a school or residence in the unincorporated areas of Berkeley County.
