BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.—On Tuesday, many Berkeley County residents took to social media to report what they believed to be an earthquake in the area.

“I don’t like feeling my house shake!” stated Sandy Hiers of Macedonia.

From the north end of the county to the south end, some homeowners said the shaking was so strong that it rearranged their household items.

“Did anybody else feel that in Shulerville? My whole house moved. Some pictures fell off the wall,” stated Harris Hiers.

The shaking was felt shortly before 12:30 p.m. by many. However, it wasn’t just areas in Berkeley County like St. Stephen, Cross, Hanahan, Moncks Corner and Goose Creek that experienced the unexplained shaking, so did the Charleston area.

At this time, though, the USGS website currently does not have an earthquake recorded.

“We see no detectable earthquake in Charleston at the time of the reported shaking,” the agency tweeted.

According to the USGS, the origin of the disturbance is unknown and possibly a sonic boom.

“Felt and heard it out here in the swamp,” stated Dan Nobles of Bonneau. “If not earthquake, then what? A sonic boom seems unlikely. It would be hear and felt by so many.”

Presently, the USGS says its systems are not designed for detecting sonic booms.
