HANAHAN, S.C.–A North Charleston woman charged with the recent strangulation of her elderly mother, Frances Anderson. In court Tuesday, a judge denied 45-year-old Paula Anderson bond.
When Hanahan police initially arrested the victim’s daughter, she reportedly told police she was hearing ghosts and that the ghosts told her if she did not kill her mother, they would kill her.
“I can’t believe they would do this to me. Got me all tripped out and… my sweet, sweet mother. I deserve the death penalty. I want to do die,” she’s quoted.
In court, Anderson whispered that quote, “she had been poisoned.”
The victim was found unresponsive on her bedroom floor.
The results of the autopsy show that her mother’s official cause of death was from asphyxiation from manual strangulation. The manner of death has been ruled a homicide by Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury.
According to police reports, the victim was found with a brown extension cord wrapped around her neck. Police say they also noticed scratch marks on the victim’s neck, consistent with marks left by someone’s fingernails.
If convicted, the suspect could face the death penalty or life in prison.
In 2011, records show that North Charleston police arrested her for simple possession of marijuana.
