HANAHAN, S.C.–Just days ahead of the GOP presidential primary in South Carolina, the candidates are campaigning throughout the Palmetto State.
GOP frontrunner Donald Trump spent part of his time in Berkeley County. According to the latest poll, the billionaire businessman remains the top choice among S.C. Republicans at 36 percent. Ted Cruz comes in at second place with 20 percent, according to Opinion Savvy.
U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida remains third at 15 percent while former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush placed fourth at 11 percent. Ohio Gov. John Kasich received a boost from his second-place finish Tuesday in New Hampshire, rising to 9 percent. Retired Maryland neurosurgeon Ben Carson fell to sixth at 5 percent in the poll.
“I don’t want an apology after the election, I want one before,” said Trump. “I will bring that lawsuit if he doesn’t apologize.”
During his time in Hanahan, Trump discussed the future of Guantanamo Bay. The navy brig in Hanahan has been considered as a possible location for those prisoners if Gitmo closes.
Earlier this month, Berkeley County Council passed a resolution opposing the closing of Guantanamo Bay and the transfer of terrorists to the naval brig.
“We’re not letting people come to this area from Guantanamo Bay, they’re going to stay where they are right now,” said Trump.
Berkeley County Supervisor Bill Peagler proposed the measure.
“Closing the Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility and relocating the terrorists to the Consolidated Naval Brig Charleston in Berkeley County would place our people and our economy in great danger,” Peagler has stated. “Passing this resolution will show that Berkeley County Government is unified in placing the safety of our county’s people and our county’s economy far above the political gamesmanship of President Obama.”
Trump has reportedly vowed that if the prisoners ended up in South Carolina before he took office, he would reopen Guantanamo and send them back.
