9-1-1 Calls Released from Shooting Involving Cpl. Kimber Gist


9-1-1 callBERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–At 12:25 a.m. on February 26th, 2016—Cpl. Kimber Gist spots a suspicious vehicle behind the Food Lion on Redbank Road and radios it in.

“Central, 144—10-38 (suspicious vehicle),” Gist tells dispatchers. “Food Lion parking lot, paper tags.”

Approximately, 15 minutes later she notifies dispatchers that she has one person in custody before trouble ensues.

“10-10!” she’s heard telling dispatchers.

“Did she just say 10-10 (fight)?” a dispatcher says.

Right after that, another deputy asks dispatchers of Gist’s location.

“I got her at Food Lion at 1316 Redbank Road,” the dispatcher states.

Dispatcher repeatedly radio Gist to find out if she’s okay, however, she does not respond. Shortly after, a woman by the name of Christine Touchberry dials 9-1-1.

“I’ve got an officer here. She was shot, Officer 144. Harbour Lake Drive,” she states.

“You said she’s shot?” the dispatcher asks.

Touchberry responds that other deputies are now pursuing the person, later identified as Travis Smith, who shot her.

“I’ve got my hazards on and it’s blocking the roadway,” Touchberry tells dispatchers.

Cpl. Gist was wearing body armor and was shot 8 times. She continues to recover from her injuries at Trident Hospital.
