GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–A community tradition continues next month, as the annual St. Jude Bike-A-Thon benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will be held on Saturday, April 9 at the Goose Creek Municipal Center.

Goose Creek Police Chief Harvey Becker is the volunteer coordinator for the event, now in its 31st year.

Chief Becker encourages everyone to participate and raise funds for children stricken with diseases like cancer, AIDS, and Sickle Cell Anemia. These funds will help St. Jude in its ongoing fight against childhood cancer and other catastrophic diseases.

Since the hospital opened in 1962 more than 150 children and families from South Carolina have received treatment from St. Jude.  Currently, more than 40 children from South Carolina are receiving treatment from St. Jude.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases.  St. Jude was recently named the top children’s cancer hospital in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.

Founded by the late entertainer, Danny Thomas, and based in Memphis, TN, St. Jude freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world.  Treatments not covered by insurance are never billed to the family, and families without insurance are never asked to pay.

St. Jude is financially supported by ALSAC, its fundraising organization, through events such as the Bike-A-Thon.

If interested in participating, sponsor forms are available in the Goose Creek Police Department lobby.  To make a donation, please call Chief Harvey Becker at 843-863-5200 ext. 309, or donate online at www.cityofgoosecreek.com (click police page).
