BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The Francis Marion National Forest is becoming the home to more than just trees and animals. Illegal dumping is also moving in and not everyone is happy about it.
“It’s very discouraging,” said Quenton Wright told Live 5 News recently. “It makes me sad to see that somebody just blatantly comes out here and dumps like this in the forest.”
Wright along with many other people in the community say they’re fed up with the trash taking over the forest. They fear that it’s getting out of control.
“Somebody is either too lazy to go to the landfill or do the proper paperwork, pay the fine or fee to dump their materials so they came here dumping in the national forest,” Wright told the TV station.
It’s not uncommon to find pieces of old plywood, appliances and furniture discarded by people who’d rather abandon their trash in the woods rather than take it to the proper place.
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Forestry Service is reportedly now investigating the problem in hopes of preventing it from continuing.
According to South Carolina law, a person caught littering could face up to a $1,000 fine or even jail time.
