BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–On Monday night, Berkeley County Council passed an amended FY16-17 budget by a 5-0 vote. This was the budget’s third and final reading.

The $74 million budget includes $900,000 set aside for ten new county positions including: five new Community Action Team Officers for the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, two administrative positions for the solicitor and public defender’s office as well as one mosquito abatement position.

The budget also includes a $1 million pay study implementation for county employees.

Councilman Josh Whitley also made a motion Monday night to add an IT position for the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office. The Finance Committee approved the request.

The committee also added $500,000 to the budget for a new courthouse.

The 2017 capital equipment fund budget includes formally implementing a county wide fleet management program with 40 patrol vehicles equipped with dashboard, the purchase of three new ambulances and equipment upgrades for the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.

The county government budget does not include a millage rate increase, which means Berkeley County will continue to have the lowest county government millage rate in the entire state.

During Monday night’s meeting, the Finance Committee also votes to give residents more transparency on tax bills if and when the county or school board raises taxes.
