BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Three Berkeley County homeowners are being called heroes after rushing to save a baby’s life during a large house fire that occurred about two months ago.
On May 31, 2016, Berkeley County 9-1-1 received a call in reference to a house fire with the possibility of a child entrapped inside a house in the Overton community of Berkeley County.
According to authorities, Steve Johnson bravely entered the home filled with flames and smoke four different times in an attempt to trying to find a 14-month old baby left inside the home.
“I think I did what any man would do,” Johnson told Live 5 News. “It’s a child’s life.”
After the baby was located and removed from the home by his father – Tina Higgins and Doug Kennedy immediately began performing CPR with Higgins performing mouth-to-nose and Kennedy performing chest compressions.
“When he took his first breath it was like thank god,” Huggins said.”The child is meant for great things definitely.”
Under the direction of Santee Circle Rural Volunteer Fire Department Chief Robert Winn, Higgins and Kennedy continued to perform CPR until Berkeley County Medic 3 Paramedics Michael Shirey and Sara Evans arrived.
Due to the heroic actions of Johnson; the quick response, knowledge and proper CPR procedures of Higgins and Kennedy; and the exemplary work by Santee Circle Rural Volunteer Fire Department Chief Robert Winn and Berkeley County Paramedics Michael Shirey and Sara Evans – the baby was safely brought to the hospital and is now home with his family.
On Monday night, Berkeley County Council presented a heartwarming proclamation to the three good Samaritans who did their part to help save a life of a child in danger.
