HANAHAN, S.C.–According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a Charleston man has been charged in connection with a traffic collision that claimed the life of a 25-year-old Hanahan woman on Sunday.

Jacquan Terrinado Spann, 27, has been charged with speeding, failure to stop for blue lights resulting in death, felony DUI resulting in death, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, driving under suspension and simple possession of marijuana.

Megan Calhoun of Goose Creek was killed during the single-vehicle crash. She was a passenger in Spann’s 2000 Nissan Altima.

According to Chief Deputy Mike Cochran, shortly before 6 a.m. on August 7th, a Berkeley County deputy attempted to stop Spann’s car for speeding. He stated that Spann was traveling 77 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Investigators say Spann refused to stop and continued to drive before crashing his car near the intersection of North Rhett and Yeamans Hall Road in Hanahan.

Calhoun was ejected from the car, authorities stated. Berkeley County Chief Deputy George Oliver said that the young woman was not wearing her seatbelt. Meanwhile, SCHP Lance Cpl. Judd Jones stated that Spann was transported to Trident Hospital with only minor injuries.

Spann was eventually transported to the Berkeley County Detention Center in Moncks Corner. He faced a judge in bond court on Tuesday. Bond was not set for the felony DUI resulting in death, PWID Methamphetamine or failure to stop for blue lights resulting in death charge. Bond was set at $615 for the marijuana charge, $647.50  for the driving under suspension charge, and Spann was given a $180 bond for the speeding charge.

According to jail records, this isn’t Spann’s first run in with the law. His arrest record dates back to as early as 2009. Prior to these latest charges, in March 2016 Spann was arrested by deputies with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office for failure to stop for blue lights and presenting false claim for payment. Other past crimes include trespassing and various drug charges.

Spann’s first courtroom appearance is scheduled for October 7th, 2016 in Moncks Corner.
