BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Santee Cooper is warning all customers, both residential and commercial, of a scam currently operating in the service area. Scammers are calling businesses claiming to be Santee Cooper employees and demanding immediate payment of bills.

These scammers are demanding that customers provide payment by a purchased, pre-loaded credit card or by wire transfer. The caller will even leave a callback number that, if dialed, is answered by someone who claims to be with Santee Cooper.

According to Santee Cooper’s investigation, these calls typically originate from a foreign country. Scam calls increase in frequency on Fridays and Saturdays, and on evenings after normal business hours, officials stated.

Santee Cooper is reminding its customers:

  • Santee Cooper will never come to your home or business demanding any form of payment.
  • We will never force you to pay with a particular form of card or other payment.
  • You are encouraged to call us at 1-800-804-7424 to verify that anyone representing themselves as an employee, actually is a Santee Cooper employee.
