Berkeley County Makes Sandbags Available; Schools, Government Buildings Close

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–On Tuesday afternoon, Berkeley County Council declared a state of emergency for the area.

Authorities say Berkeley County will begin operating at OPCON 3 starting at 5 p.m today. Tomorrow at 8 a.m., county leaders expect to move to OPCON 2 and eventually move to OPCON 1 by 3 p.m.

Berkeley County officials say they have increased the staffing levels of our emergency personnel – 911 communicators, EMS crews and sheriff deputies.

At 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Berkeley County will open up its Citizen Information Line. The telephone number is 843-719-4800.

By calling that number, residents will be able to get updated information from the county’s emergency preparedness department on Hurricane Matthew, and they will also have the opportunity to report issues that the county should be aware of including impassable roadways due to flooding or downed trees.

Berkeley County schools will be closed Wednesday through the rest of the week.

Berkeley County government buildings, including the courthouse, will also be closed Wednesday through the rest of the week.

The Berkeley County landfill and convenience centers will operate normal business hours tomorrow. The landfill and convenience center will be closed Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

– DANIEL ISLAND EVACUATION ROUTE
Take I-526 to I-26; or follow Clements Ferry Rd. to SC 41 to SC 402 to US 52.

– CAINHOY EVACUATION ROUTE
Take Cainhoy Road to SC 402 to US 52.
