Gov. Nikki Haley: Evacuation Orders Lifted For Berkeley County

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–On Sunday, Governor Nikki Haley announced that evacuation orders have been lifted for Berkeley, Charleston, Dorchester and Colleton Counties effective immediately.

“The way we lift evacuations is meant to be teamwork. We rely on the county leaders and the sheriff’s office to tell us when we need to lift the evacuations. They know your community better than we do,” stated Haley on Sunday.

According to Berkeley County officials, while residents are able to now return home, they strongly recommend that they check the status of electricity first. Thousands of people still remain without power in Berkeley County.

According to Berkeley Electric, as of 12:30 p.m. today, about 45,000 remain without power. Santee Cooper reports approximately 1,400 people are without power in the Bonneau, St. Stephen, Moncks Corner and Pinopolis area. The company reports that more than 50,000 are without power along the Grand Strand.

“Please prepare for the possibility that you may return to a home without power for a few days,” posted the county via social media. “Please also be careful during your return, as there may be downed trees and power lines at your residence.”

Berkeley County is now operating at OPCON Level 3 with limited personnel in the Emergency Operations Center. The Citizen Information Line of 843-719-4800 will remain open through the night.

Berkeley County Hurricane Matthew Damage Assessment and the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office are working hard to assess damage across the county.

Residents are encouraged to utilize the Hurricane Matthew Damage Assessment Facebook page to share pictures of damage at your location. When doing so, please include the address of the pictures you post.

Berkeley County Government offices, including the Courthouse, will be closed tomorrow – Monday, October 10, 2016.

The Berkeley County Council meeting tomorrow has been cancelled and will be rescheduled at a later date.

The Berkeley County convenience center on Oakley Road will be open today until 7PM. The landfill will reopen at normal operations and operating houses tomorrow.

There will not be a curfew in Berkeley County tonight.
