MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – A thirty-two year old Berkeley County man pled guilty on Monday to two counts of Burglary, two counts of Kidnapping and two counts of Assault and Battery in the first degree for a series of 2014 Burglaries that ended in a violent home invasion and attack on a woman in the Cane Bay neighborhood of Summerville.
Judge Kristi L. Harrington sentenced Brandan Keith Sigmon to Thirty (30) years in the South Carolina Department of Corrections. He must serve eighty-five percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
On the afternoon of Sept, 3, 2014, the victim, a homemaker, was playing with her two toddlers when she heard her doorbell ring repeatedly. A man she did not recognize told her through the door that he was a salesman. Without opening her front door, the victim told the defendant she was not interested and he asked to speak to her husband. The victim then told Sigmon that he should leave or she would call the police.
The victim was on the phone with her husband discussing the strange encounter when she heard glass breaking in her back door and saw the defendant running toward her. Her husband heard screaming and yelling and called 911.
What followed was a nightmare that continues to affect the young victim and her children more than two years later. After kicking in the backdoor, the defendant began yelling at the victim to shut up, knocking her cell phone out of her hand as he repeatedly hit her in the face and head with his fists and a handgun.
He slammed her head through a wall in two places in her home and punched her so hard in the mouth that her front tooth broke off. When the victim’s three year old son began to run to his mother, Sigmon shoved him so forcefully that he fell down hitting his head on a tile floor.
The defendant continued to beat the young mother about the head and face and eventually shoved her to the floor and began using a stun gun on her back as he sat on top of her. It wasn’t until the victim convinced Sigmon that her husband was likely calling the police, that he ran out of the house and jumped over her backyard fence.
Investigation later revealed that Sigmon had been going door to door in the victim’s neighborhood ringing doorbells and pretending to sell Kirby vacuum cleaners. A surveillance system at one house recorded Sigmon going to several houses, ringing the doorbell and moving on to the next house. The Berkeley County Sherriff’s Office set up a perimeter and various checkpoints around the neighborhood until Sigmon was apprehended later that evening. The victim was transported to the hospital where she was treated for a large gash in the back of her head and several lacerations to her head and face. She received ongoing treatment and oral surgery to the injuries to her mouth.
Further investigation revealed that Sigmon had committed a burglary to another home in Berkeley County on August 19, 2014 and one in Dorchester County on August 31, 2014. Some of the items stolen from those homes were recovered from the defendant’s garage.
The defendant had prior convictions for Driving under the Influence and Public Disorderly Conduct.
