BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Insurance fraud is one of America’s largest crimes — at least $80 billion is stolen each year.

Ultimately, the costs associated with insurance fraud are passed down to honest consumers. However, the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is doing its part to curb the problem.

On Thursday in Myrtle Beach, the South Carolina Insurance Fraud Investigators recognized Captain Bobby Schuler for his efforts in helping to fight insurance fraud.

“Captain Schuler is a dedicated public servant and we know the kind of work he does. It is nice to see that his peers have recognized his work,” Sheriff Lewis stated.

The average American household pays $1,030 per year  in out-of-pocket-costs as a result of insurance fraud.

The South Carolina Insurance Fraud Investigators (SCIFI) is a non-profit organization of insurance fraud investigators representing all of the major insurance carriers in the state of South Carolina, both state and local law enforcement investigators responsible for investigating insurance fraud related crimes, fire service and other allied personnel associated with insurance fraud investigation, suppression, and prevention.
